Along with neighbor mansions Bianka and Gorica, the Herberstein
Mansion is the most beautifully preserved of the three historical mansions
in the Šalek Valley (Šaleška dolina). It is located between the Castle
of Velenje and the Šalek Castle, slightly above the town and next to
the forest. It was built in the second half of the 19th century. Its
owners from the end of the century to the end of the Second World War
were baron von Ritter, Josef Eder and Maria
Anna von Herberstein in Proskau.
The mansion was first named after its original owner - the Ritter
Mansion, after which it was called the Neu Schalleg
Mansion; today,
it is the Herberstein Mansion. At the end of the First
World War, in 1918, the mansion became the property of countess
von Herberstein in
Proskau of the renowned Herberstein family, which dates back
to at least 13th century. A prominent member of this family was Žiga
Herberstein,
the Austrian ambassador in Moscow. At the time that the countess
moved to Velenje, the Herberstein family owned property in Graz,
Vienna, Liebochovice, as well as on Slovenian territory, in Ptuj, Vurberk
and
Hrastovec.
The mansion entrance features a permanent exhibition of photographs,
documents and narration to unveil the intriguing and mysterious story
of the countess Maria Anna von Herberstein, the last inhabitant of
the mansion until the end of the Second World War.
After the countess died, the mansion hosted several enterprises,
from agricultural cooperative to retirement home for elderly, to be
finally saved from ruin by Gorenje. The company provided full restoration
and renovation of the building and delegated its management to the
company Gorenje Gostinstvo (Gorenje Catering) incorporated for the
occasion.
The building is watchfully maintained and renovated by the
Gorenje Gostinstvo.
